Rise in British seaside breaks leads to new £400K holiday development

A surge in popularity for British seaside holidays has led to a new £400,000 seafront holiday enterprise being unveiled on the shores of Morecambe Bay.

Holiday company South Lakeland Parks has created a prestigious Bay View development at its cliff-top Ocean Edge Leisure Park at Moneyclose Lane, Heysham.

It means families, couples and the retired can now choose from one of 47 new pitches just yards from the shore as a base for their luxury caravan holiday home.

The major investment was officially opened this week and has won praise from Coun Shirley Burns, portfolio holder for tourism on Lancaster City Council.

Ocean Edge employs 50 people and is run by parent company, South Lakeland Parks based at Natland, near Kendal, Cumbria. Work has been ongoing for months to upgrade both the seafront development and play areas for static caravan holiday homes.

Previously, touring caravans and motor homes used to occupy the seafront location, but the switch will mean visitors staying and spending longer in the local area. The company now plans a series of promotions to show interested visitors the park’s spectacular location and high-quality facilities.

Mark McGarry, Ocean Edge’s Manager, said: “This is a spectacular place for a holiday,
commanding one of the best views there is of the Bay and the Lake District hills. It will help generate a huge amount of interest in the area as a place to visit. It will also help in the long-term revival of Morecambe as more visitors staying with Ocean Edge means more customers for local businesses.”

Nigel Wimpenny, Chief Executive of the park’s parent company, South Lakeland Parks, said: “One of the few advantages of the recession is that Britain has fallen in love with the seaside again. Caravan holidays are back in fashion because people are beginning realise that standards have rocketed from what they once were. They are also remembering that we do have some very special locations in this country which have been regenerated, where they can have a memorable family holiday which doesn’t cost the earth.”

South Lakeland Parks have invested over £3 million over the last year alone in improvements across the nine parks it runs including Ocean Edge, and the nearby Regent Leisure Park, Morecambe.
